How to pick up inner elements from orphan mesh?

Hi, I have three elements in thickness direction of an orphan mesh. How can I pick up the inner layer as an element set in abaqus/cae?

I do not think that this can be done, unless you are looking at a flat surface. If your surfaces are flat then you could use a window to pick the inner layer.

When selecting elements from the viewport, click the "Show/Hide  Selection Options"-icon. Then press and hold the "Select From All Entities"-icon and lastly choose the interior option.
