Railway bridge design books etc?

Railway bridge design books etc?

Railway bridge design books etc?

(OP)
im currently been assigned to design a 60-m railway bridge for light rail train.

im new on this and i need info on the design considerations, design criteria, design loads/load combos, special detailings and anything about railway bridges anyone?

RE: Railway bridge design books etc?

I'd start with AREMA.  I think they only have Cooper E-80 loadings though for live load but they do have load combinations etc.  If the bridge is not to be designed for E-80 then you'll need to get the load criteria from the client.
Good Luck.

RE: Railway bridge design books etc?

Start with "PCI bridge design manual."

RE: Railway bridge design books etc?

You will need specific light rail loading which should be available from a number of manufacturers.  There are no standards yet available that I'm aware of for Light Rail vehicles.  Above the light rail, you'll need also check for uniform track loading and any type of maintenance vehicles.  Again, that information should be available from manufactureres.

AREMA should not be used as it is too heavy.

RE: Railway bridge design books etc?

All,

AREMA does publish guidance for railroad structures (including bridges) and light rail applications.

That having been said, other transportation codes/standards should also be consulted, such as AASHTO's LRFD Bridge specifications, especially if there is a federal funding component.
