Maximum model size in CAE

Maximum model size in CAE

Hi All,

Has anyone found a limit to CAE in terms of the size/complexity of models/database size in Mb?

Is there a point where CAE refuses to continue and decides the best option is to crash/quit?

"Has anyone found a limit to CAE in terms of the size/complexity of models/database size in Mb?"

This depends on your machine resources.

"Is there a point where CAE refuses to continue and decides the best option is to crash/quit?"

Yes, but again it depends on your PC.

A while ago I tried to use Abaqus/Viewer to post process a model of nearly 2 million nodes on my Win2K machine with 2GB of memory, it started off okay, but when I tried to change load case it gave up ! I then moved to a colleague's XP machine with 3GB of memory and had no troubles.

So presuming one has unlimited hardware resource, there is no software limitation?

RE: Maximum model size in CAE

MrMyers,
Is this a hypothetical question?

Partly out of interest and partly out of necessity.

We are currently undertaking a fairly complex analysis and would be interested to know if we should expect our model creation to become limited for any reason.

RE: Maximum model size in CAE

The question shouldn't really arise if you're adept at modelling. I'm surprised at some very large models I've seen when the model can be reduced by reasonable assumptions or sub-modelling techniques can be used to reduce the overall size. Some I've seen just turned the screen black with the number of elements they had. For me that said they didn't know what they were doing.
As people have said, it's generally you rmachines capacity that governs the size of model and whether or not you can run the analysis and store the results. I'd review the way you intend to model what ever it is and reduce it down to a more manageable size. You should have no loss of accuracy if you use the right methods or assumptions.

That is what my mentor used to call "infinite modeling"
