Lights out in Saskatchewan?

Lights out in Saskatchewan?

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

(OP)
OH, I knew this one would go downhill fast, but not THAT fast...

60% of the province without power...  600 people affected...

old field guy

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

Haha.
I actually couldn't get that link to ever light up. Started thinking the power might be down where that link was originating..

Are you in the blackout area? 600 people.. Sounds like about one big diesel generator.

I visited Dawson,(edge of the Yukon River),once.  The whole town was run on a couple of big Cats in one building at the end of main street.

I can never remember if that is Dawson City or Dawson.

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

Must have been 600,000 people, but it appears things are back to normal.

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

The article initially blames the problem on a disturbance in the Western US Grid and then later on says that it was lines down in Minnesota.  Minnesota isn't even close to being on the Western US Grid.

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

Yukon river, Dawson City Yukon territory, or Dawson Eh.
Dawson Creek British Columbia, Mile One on the Alaska Highway, about 1300 miles South-East of Dawson City Eh.
Saskatchewan borders Montana and North Dakota Eh.
600 people affected; Sounds like an Albertan bashing Saskatchewan. Should be 600,000 Eh.
yours from C(Eh)N(Eh)D(Eh)

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

LoLo  Got it.  Always confusing when you drive thru both on the same trip?  Eh

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

It's always our fault, by definition.

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

The Saks Power problem was caused by the loss of a 345 kV line in Minnesota (one phase ended up on the ground).  That line loss caused another line to trip off sympathetically.  David, the "western grid" mentioned here is the western part of the eastern grid.  Always confusing when it is described that way.

I was at NSP's control center when this happened, all the facts are not in yet--should be a report out soon.  Words like Islanded, loss of load, etc will be in the report--not good that it happened but systems and operators did the right thing and stopped it dead in its tracks.

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

In defense of my Canadian countrymen, I would like to point out that Saskatchewan's population is greater than that of eight US states.

SaskPower has 440,000 customers.

Now that our dollar is worth more that the US greenback, I expect to see a flood of American refugees clogging our borders ;)

RE: Lights out in Saskatchewan?

Is that eight US states all at once or more than any one of eight states?  It does sound like the centers at getting better at disconnecting and limiting the spread of an outage.
