Lake ice design load expected on a pipe dock

Lake ice design load expected on a pipe dock

Lake ice design load expected on a pipe dock

(OP)
Hi,
I'm currently designing a permanent pipe dock to be installed at the cabin...In addition to considering buckling, I need to consider ice loading...Does anyone know what the design pressure due to ice loading on marine structures is?  Is this load dependant on the body of water (My location is in a small bay off of a big lake with very little wave action)

Thanks for helping me keep my dock secure!

Hinge it at the shore, and prepare shearlegs and a winch to lift it. The only way to protect a pipe dock from ice is to remove it from the water in the fall.

Wave action has nothing to do with it.  When the ice 'goes out', everything that's frozen into it goes, too.

Have you seen this?

Great page.

Love the first sentence:  "...nature considers all docks to be removable..."

I grew up in Wisconsin near Lake Winnebago. At 30 x 10 miles it is the 3rd largest fresh water lake in the USA. In the spring when the ice sheet is not frozen to the shore the wind can exerted enough force on the ice that it piles up on shore, and has been known to take out buildings.

I would also be concerned with the expansion of the freezing water in your pipes.
