Blastproof Buildings

Blastproof Buildings

Blastproof Buildings

(OP)
Question for Blastrep or anyone else who has had a similar experience:

I am just beginning to look at a large contract involving the supply of stick-built and modular (pre-assembled) buildings, several of which will be designed for blast load and in a high H2S environment hence they will all have HVAC and air purification systems with double airlocks, F&G detection, deluge etc.

The stick-built buildings will generally be warehouse & storage type units which are too large to be moved by barge and hence erected on site, while the others will be comprised of Temporary Refuge, BA Recovery stations, Emerg. diesel gensets and process type buildings (ie; chem dosing packages, MOL & Booster pump bldgs).

One strategy we have looked at involves selection of a specialist building contractor who will be responsible for detailed design of the structures based on a FEED package, who will then interface with nominated process package equipment suppliers to coordinate for the installation of equipment within the buildings.

The other strategy is to provide the process equipment suppliers with the detailed design package for the buildings and have them supply their kit within the blast proofed enclosure.

One of the constraints we will face is finding a specialist buildings supplier with a shipyard, or access to one to facilitate transport of the modularised buildings.

Ok, got any ideas, experiences, advice etc. as to the best/least painfull way to manage a complex package like this with multiple interfaces????

I'm all ears....and eyes.

RE: Blastproof Buildings

I've never seen equipment is blast resistant buildings, except for firewater pumps or some DCS/PLC racks or MCC racks.

You'll need to a hazard analysis of purging work areas for H2S.  Here is a classic example.  The gas has 50 ppm H2S, by the time you get 10 ppm H2S in the building, the O2 is 6% and the occupants have fallen over for lack of O2 before they will start to feel any effects of the H2S.

To your question. If the equipment is skidded, can have working access room around it if enclosed, and a building can be added at the suppliers location, let them put in the building and detection system and air handlers or what ever to meet the outcome of your internal hazard analysis.  Else, I'd suspect you'll need field erection around several skids that can not be covered by the vendors.
