Double sided butt weld joint

Double sided butt weld joint

Double sided butt weld joint

(OP)
Hello,

On your opinion, according to ASME B 31.3,is it possible to weld some welded neck flanges by using a double sided butt weld joint ?Thanks for your help.

RE: Double sided butt weld joint

It's certainly possible on larger diameters, but I can't say I have ever seen it done. It would need a complex weld prep both sides, and careful dressing of the interior weld to avoid crevice corrosion etc.
Potentially it would be good for avoidance of fatigue when compared with the usual unbacked butt weld.

RE: Double sided butt weld joint

WHY would you want too? The ends are factory prepped for a multi-pass bevel weld, where you can get full penetration, and in all sizes. So I really don't see the need for what you’re asking for!??

RE: Double sided butt weld joint

There is no prohibition to do so. You may weld from both sides if you so wish and are able to do so. When fit up is difficult and full penetration is not acheived from one side, you can always backweld (accessibility permitting). In some cases it may be desirable to weld the ID side first and complete the weld from the OD side.
