Corrosion book recommendations

Corrosion book recommendations

(OP)
As an entry-level mechanical engineer I'm studying my way up to be familiar with all aspects in the field including corrosion engineering. Can someone recommend me a basic corrosion related handbook? As a design/mechanical engineer I have found myself lost in choosing the most efficiency material. My company deals with both metals and plastics.

Thank you,
Sung Hong

RE: Corrosion book recommendations

The best sources would be the ASM Handbooks on Corrosion:

http://asmcommunity.asminternational.org/portal/site/ASM/AsmStore/ProductDetails/?vgnextoid=3adcdacc7e0f3110VgnVCM1000000e1e010aRCRD

These are very comprehensive (and expensive).

Perhaps a lower-price, single volume would meet your needs.  Uhlig's is a popular book:

http://www.amazon.com/Uhligs-Corrosion-Handbook-Winston-Revie/dp/0471157775/ref=sr_oe_2_1/103-3862293-2636635?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189884176&sr=1-2

Corrosion Engineering by Fontana is a little older, but a very good book:

RE: Corrosion book recommendations

The newer editions of the last book may be by Fontana and Green.  Good book.
There are some great books available from MTI.  www.mti-global.org  These are good if you work in specific environments (acids and such).

The ASM Corrosion Handbook is now in three volumes.

RE: Corrosion book recommendations

If you have to make a Materials Selection, i'll suggest you also this book, there is also a brief introduction and explanation of the principal corrosion mechanisms and a lot of Materials Selection example with templates that guide you in selecting a Material. I've found it very useful.

Materials Selection for Hydrocarbon and Chemical Plants

hope this help

RE: Corrosion book recommendations

The document referenced by laner5 is an an outstanding source of information on corrosion. The galvanometric series on metals in seawater alone is worth a star.

RE: Corrosion book recommendations

All excellent recommendations. For a best single volume, I recommend Handbook of Corrosion Engineering, 1139 pages (2000) by Pierre R. Roberge. Covers both science & applications (all the alloys). Has a set of Pourbaix diagrams (Potential vs. pH equilibrium diagrams), for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni & Zn, including separate diagrams for oxide forms & hydroxides.
