Material of construction in coastal environment

Material of construction in coastal environment

(OP)
I'm designing some equipment to go in a coastal environment.  Specifically, a simple equipment skid that supports pumps and blowers, etc.  The skid is placed outdoors and is not subjected to chemicals, etc.

I'm trying to decide between SS316 and galvanized, or painted galvanized, etc.

Your help is appreciated.

RE: Material of construction in coastal environment

Painted galvanized steel should be a good option provided that the paint is not damaged.  I would expect this to be cheaper than Type 316 stainless.

Filtration,

In my opinion the selection should be based on different aspects:

-materials properties, the weight that your skid will support can have an influences on the materials selected,

-design life of your skid and accessibility for inspection and maintenance, the necessity to re-paint, time, personnel.., the skid can have a great influences on the total cost over the entire life of the skid.

-Regarding Corrosion resistance in my opinion the two choices are quite similar but the distance from the sea and the shape of the skid can make some differences.

There is a good software free that will help you in assessing the suitability of stainless steel for atmospheric exposure.

and some good papers for galvanized steel:

hope this helps

RE: Material of construction in coastal environment

We just sent the skids out and had them galvanized with no paint.  Equipment that could not be galvanized was painted in a shop where climate was controlled.  Teflon coated bolts for assembly, then be prepared to paint once every few years.
