linking revision data from part to drawing

linking revision data from part to drawing

I have included a blank revision table in our sheet templates - is there a way for the table to be automatically populated from property information in the part file?  Currently, i only carry over the revision letter and link it to the box in the sheet format.

RE: linking revision data from part to drawing

Not that I know of; but you can create Custom Properties in a part, and type a reference to that property in a cell of the Rev Table.

e.g. Property = Rev A with a Value of 3" Length Was 2.75"
The typed reference in the cell would be $PRPSHEET:"Rev A"

cheers

RE: linking revision data from part to drawing

Jeff ... I believe the OP is wanting to reference cells in a Rev Table, not just Annotations in a drawing.

cheers

Yes, but you either need a SW macro, or use an excel file that has its own macro.  Either than that, you can manually create the fields on the sheet format with the method described above for annotation notes.

the last 2 posters seem to follow what i was trying to say.  I want to keep all of the revision information (letter, description, date, etc) in the part file - i'm guessing as custom properties- and then have the drawing build the revision table from it.  So how can you link from a cell that doesn't exist yet?  Sounds like i'm headed for deep macro or programming territory.

How else could you know the revision history of a part file without opening the corresponding drawing?

RE: linking revision data from part to drawing

You can use the Design Jornal, but it requires manual editing as well.

RE: linking revision data from part to drawing

If you use PDMWorks (or similar) it keeps track of revisons, but many people don't use it.

If a drawing is lost or corrupted, the revision history would also be lost.

SW08 has bi-directional capabilities in its BOM. Properties entered into a BOM can be written back to the model. Having the revision history in the model and a Revision Table with the same auto-population and bi-directional capabilities as a BOM would make a great enhancement request.

cheers

CBL,  you know what? I just saw that BOM bi-directional update feature at a SW presentation on friday.  Unfortunately i did not put 2 and 2 together and ask about revision tables.

We use our MRP/ERP system to keep track of the latest revision, but not the history.  That's left to the drawings.  The nice thing about useing autocad was that the model and the drawing were one and the same.  Now we have two files to worry about, and it's all too easy for information like revisions to get out of sync.

RE: linking revision data from part to drawing

I like CBL's comment about "If a drawing is lost or corrupted, the revision history would also be lost".

I have problem with one of the users here that wants to do the same thing and put the revision in with the part or assembly and have it propagate the drawing and rev block.
I have 98% of my custom properties in the drawing templates with the other 2% in the part and assemble templates. That would be $PRPSHEET:{SW-File Name} and $PRPSHEET:{Description}. Also, I would like to make the comment, it's easy for Document Control to fill out the properties in the drawing instead of opening assembles and parts. That’s a little scary to me…!

Just my opinion…
