General Tables- Display Basic Dims

General Tables- Display Basic Dims

General Tables- Display Basic Dims

(OP)
I have inserted a general table in a SW drawing, and I can't insert a dimension inside a Basic Dim box.  Any suggestions?

RE: General Tables- Display Basic Dims

I don't use Basic Dims, but don't you create the dim and then select the Basic option?

Am I misunderstanding the question?

cheers

RE: General Tables- Display Basic Dims

I understand it as after he puts in a General table and then puts a dimension inside a dimension box or use a basic dim?

MadMango,

The ASME Y14.5M-1994 allows tabular dimensioning.  It allows you to write a note stating that your dimensions are basic, as opposed to placing the numbers in boxes.  All the tabular dimensions shown in the standard are shown with outline boxes.

   Attach a note.

Scott, SW07 SP4.0

I created a table using the General Table insert method.  I wrote some notes, and in one of them I have to reference a Basic Dimension from another drawing.

I think Drawoh has the solution... though all I can find are small paragraphs 1.9.3 and 3.7  Maybe this isn't a SW question and I should repost, but what should the wording in my note state?

RE: General Tables- Display Basic Dims

All,
I have not found anything in ASME Y 14.5 that describes the use of notes for basic dimensions in a table. The specification does allow for a general note for dimension that are to be basic. The note is as follows:

UNTOLERANCED DIMENSIONS LOCATING TRUE POSITION ARE BASIC.

This note refers to a view where all dimensions are shown for locating their respective holes. I do not see where this would make sense. I would just add the basic box to all dimensions.

It would make sense to have a "note" provision for tabulated dimensions like those in a hole table but as I said, I cannot find this in ASME Y14.5.

EniEddie,

ASME Y14.5M-1994 has the note you list above, and it shows tablular dimensions.  These are not on the same page, but the concept is valid.  You cannot conveniently box the dimensions, so you place a note.

I see no reason why the note cannot say "ALL TABULAR TRUE POSITION DIMENSIONS ARE BASIC."

RE: General Tables- Display Basic Dims

drawoh,
For my clarification, could you identify the page or pages you are referring to?

Also, by your example, Are you making up the note? If so, I'd have to disagree about the wording.
The dimensions are not "True Position" dimension, they are "Untoleranced" dimensions. True position is the condition of a feature or pattern of features, therefore:
UNTOLERANCED DIMENSIONS LOCATING TRUE POSITION
(XLOC AND YLOC) ARE BASIC

I have an example but I have never attached anything here. How is this done?
Thanks

RE: General Tables- Display Basic Dims

EniEddie,

I made the note up.  How about "ALL TABULAR DIMENSIONS ARE BASIC."?
