CPU max usage

CPU max usage

CPU max usage

(OP)
Hello,
I have been havibng constant assembly lag so I downloaded a nice Yahoo Widget that shows my CPU usage.  It is using 100% by just running my moses back and forth over my assembly model.  If I minimize SW and then maximize it, it take about 10 seconds to come back up.  The model is large (750+ bodies) & 17MB.  What is the solution to bring this percentage to below 100% at all times?  I do have the 3GB switch enabled as well and Large Assy Mode is set to 1000.  Faster processor, multiple cores?

Suggestions and comments welcomed,

SW2007 SP3.1
Dell Precision 670
3GB RAM
3Ghz Xeon processor
WinXP SP2

RE: CPU max usage

A faster processor would be the most direct option.  Multiple cores--for now--won't really help unless you're running a lot of other crap in the background like I do (email, browsers, anti-virus, firewall, media players, etc.).

What graphics card do you have?  Some share the load and take a bit out of your system's processor and RAM.

Hi Jeff,
I am running an nVidia FX3450.  I do typically have, Outlook, IE, AV, inventory programs, etc. running as well.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

RE: CPU max usage

What is your VC driver that you are using... Honestly mine does the same thing when I run the mouse over the SW... just rolling the mouse takes it up to 50 to 85% already... I don't think this is a real issue... but just check to make sure your drivers are up to date.

RE: CPU max usage

A multi-core chip might help out if you've got that stuff running normally while using SW (as I do).  Mine's an AMD FX-60 and handles the load fairly well, but most modelling really splits the load between the two cores and rarely uses more than about 60% of capacity.  It's a stable system (until recently, that is--need to tweak some things).

Check the drivers for your card as Scott mentioned and make sure it's the driver recommended by SolidWorks at their web site and not merely the newest driver available.

RE: CPU max usage

You said that you have the large assy mode set to 1000.  Are all of your parts in the assy loading lightwieght?  if not, set the large assy mode lower (100?) and be sure to turn off any add-ins that you are not using.  Hopefully it's as simple as that.
