Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

(OP)
Is possible to create an assembly file from a multibody part?  The part files in the assembly are the bodies from the multibody part.

RE: Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

File > Save As > and select the assembly format instead of part format for file type.  This will create an assembly with part files for each body.

RE: Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

Does it need to remain linked to the original multi-body part file?

If so, right click the Solid Bodies and select "Save Bodies". It will save each body out to a part file with the option to create an assemby. All files remain linked to the original master.

Right--I also use Jason's method all the time for creating housings as a single body, splitting them, and then saving out as separate files for detailing.  Good feature to know.

Theophilus - I'm not able to select the assembly format from the Save As dialog box.

I was able to use the "Save Bodies" technique.  It works well.  Thanks!

RE: Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

Whoops!  Sorry about that.  (It works the other way around.)

RE: Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

If you don't need or want to maintain references back to the original multibody part, you can save it as an IGES (parasolid won't work in this case - somehow it remembers that a part was exported rather than an assembly) and then open the IGES, making sure that the option to import multiple bodies as parts is checked.  SW will make all the bodies into parts and then put them in an assembly in the correct location (floating, no mates) for you.  The part files will be automatically created in the folder that the IGES file was in.  You might want to go ahead and select all the components of the assembly and Fix them, then just float and mate the ones you need to move around.

RE: Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

I was just wondering about that.  Maybe it's the native parasolid kernel that enables SW to "remember" the multi-body properties of the file?

RE: Mutlibody Part to Assembly File

That's my guess.  However, even though I haven't ever actually needed it myself, I'd still rather have the option of importing multiple bodies as parts, whether they came from a single part file or an assembly.
