Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

(OP)
I am currently working on a project utilizing ACPs due to long term settlement criteria.  we understand that a single bar is typically utilized if the pile is to resist uplift forces and a reinforcing cage extended a development length beyond the point of fixity is utilized when the ACP is resisting lateral forces.  is there any requirement for reinforcment for piles carrying only vertical load? (seismic design cat b), is the concrete considered confined and therfore capacity based only on codes criteia of 25%*f'c and reinforcement not required?  I intend on only reinforcing the number of piles required to give us an aggragate resistance which exceeds the calculated lateral force if no minimum reinforcement criteria exists.

RE: Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

If the pile only resists vertical load, I see no reason to add reinforcement.

RE: Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

Wouldn't there be a bending moment the length of the pile even with just a vertical load?  Those piles aren't formed like columns.  There will be eccentricities in the borehole that put the boundry of the pile outside (and inside) of where you intend the pile to be.  That will create a moment in and of itself.  I don't know how much steel costs, but better to be safe than sorry.

RE: Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

I'm looking for a formula to design helical piles.  Can someone point me in the right direction on line??

RE: Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

Helical piles may be the solution you are looking for also.

RE: Auger Cast Pile Reinforcement Requirements

If you have only vertical loads you don't need reinforcement ( apart from connections to the structure ).
if you have to design to resist to seismic loads then you have horizontal loads and you need a full reinforcement.
