automated guided vehicles

Hi, everyone.

We are considering purchasing an AGV(automated or laser guided vehicles) to transport our finished enclosures from the weld department to the fishing department about 200 yards away. Being new at this type of equipment has anyone one out there had any experience with these unit? Can you suggest one to look at? What controls have been successful? How well do they travel with minor floor deviations? Any suggestions you can give are appreciated.
Our largest product is 3000lbs. I am looking at some with a very low profile. To minimize the distance the crane will have to go to set it on it as well as stability while traveling.

RE: automated guided vehicles

I don't have any first hand experience other than a passing knowledge of the different technologies used for AGVs.  But I would have to question:  do you have the production volume to support the expense of an AGV system installation plus the technical personnel training to keep it running?

Or would it just be simpler and cheaper to have a guy with a tugger?

tygerdawg,
We are attempting to prove this, at first glance you would think yes. I sure you are aware the closer you look at something, processes can change and procedure can be simplified to where it may not be justified. But to directly answer your question the volume is there approximity 1000 enclosures or pallets a day two drivers full time two shifts. If we were to employ one of these unit these drivers could be used else where in the facility more constructively. My roll here normally isn't concerned with how supervision handle product but rather make sure what they have is working to it fullest potential. But watching the traffic within the main asile of multiple fork truck is driving me crazy. This idea is still in the infant stage and my never develope but I think it's worth looking at.

How about electrical carts the are controlled by fixed electrical motor and run from a power assist cable set like a power line. You know like the old bumper cars from the circus/festivals
