ENGINE STARTER

ENGINE STARTER

ENGINE STARTER

(OP)
Hi

Can someone advice where can I find the theory of operation of the starter? I am basically trying to figure the peak current usage looking for a way to increase my starter contacts life.

RE: ENGINE STARTER

If possible reface all the contact points with silver tips. Both the fixed contacts, and the moving contact. Machine down the existing parts and braze on silver facings. Re-machine.

Assuming they are of adequate area already this should give you the best compromise.

Some industrial and higher end automotive starter motors come this way OE.

Hope this helps, John.

Thanks a lot for your valuable info...

In order to get a full knowledge on this area, I would like (if possible) to get some links to the starter theory of operation, like peak current consumption and normal current consumption....

This is a kind of small research to give more life to contacts for racing starters, by manipulating permited current during starter energize cycle.

RE: ENGINE STARTER

Is this a car?  What size engine?  What type of starter (gear reduction?)

RE: ENGINE STARTER

For typical automotive engines (V6,V8)

In warm weather 30 Amp draw.

In cold weather -20F(-28C) 300 Amps.

RE: ENGINE STARTER

the current approach by most oems is the permant magnet type smaller lighter and less amperage draw

RE: ENGINE STARTER

Don't forget that the current draw during cranking is cyclic and can still hit 300 amp for periods.
