Piece of Metal without function welded to an Elbow.

(OP)
Hi...  I am doing visual inspection to a Gas Plant, Found a 1"x1"X4" piece of metal welded to an elbow. That piece of metal doesn´t have any function...well...none known. Is there any code sugesting what to do with it?... Thanks.

CorpMex.

RE: Piece of Metal without function welded to an Elbow.

No, the Code would not address attachments left in place for installation purposes. I would leave it alone if it isn't bothering anyone.

RE: Piece of Metal without function welded to an Elbow.

I agree w/METENGR but only if you can establish that it was added in accordance with the applicable Code/Standard in effect. Examples: requirement for similar P#; requirement to be welded by qualified welder; requirement for no undercut that reduces the wall thickness etc.

RE: Piece of Metal without function welded to an Elbow.

Agree with metengr. Probably a fit up tab.

QAFitz is entirely correct for shop or first inspection. Doubt if you will find any of these items now.

If it bothers you, torch it off above the surface and grind flush.
