We resume work tomorrow

We resume work tomorrow

We resume work tomorrow

(OP)
When we discharge (or load) heavy cargoes, it's always preferred to do it with daylight.

Let's say that after loading two piece the next three are left for the next day.

What should I say? Loading was "deferred" or "postponed"?

Is it any difference between both expresions?

Agustín Tomás

RE: We resume work tomorrow

I would go with "deferred".  This indicates to me that the activity was delayed for an arbitrary and non-critical reason.  "Postponed" would indicate to me that there was a serious problem that causes a delay.

"I will defer this activity until tomorrow because I need sleep."

"I will postpone this activity until next week because the machine is broken."

But they are almost equivalent.  In American English, I think either one would work just as well.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

Deferred or postponed suggests that there is a delay vs some initial planning, but in your case there is none since you "always" load in daylight.

So I would just say "loading continues tomorrow".

(waiting for more eloquent people to throw in another dozen of variations to the theme! smile )

RE: We resume work tomorrow

How about "suspended?"

RE: We resume work tomorrow

Deferred or postponed are essentially equivalent.

But in management-speak, both could be viewed as a delay.  Why not put a positive spin on it, the title of your post is perfect.

We resume tomorrow.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

Interrupted, say, by darkness?

RE: We resume work tomorrow

I have to agree with epoisses' post.  Something like "Loading continues at daylight tomorrow" would work.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

"Postponed" and "deferred" both suggest to me a delay in starting rather than something that comes partway through.  If there's any difference between them, I think it's that I'd apply "postponed" more to an event, and "deferred" more to an activity.

"Interrupted" often suggests an unexpected break, while "suspended" is something I would normally use more if I wasn't sure when conditions would be right for work to resume.

How about "stopped for the night"

A.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

Actually, loading is neither "deferred" nor "postponed". If something takes 2 days, it takes 2 days.

I would just say that "loading is under way, 2 out of 5 completed".

RE: We resume work tomorrow

I agree with Ashereng. Neither deferred nor postponed is correct. That would imply that the entire loading operation would be deferred to the next day. But in fact an ongoing operation was interrupted due to bad light and will resume the next day.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

A load is always suspended until it is dropped, just like this post should be. bigsmile

RE: We resume work tomorrow

"We resume work tomorrow"

Is that a French phrase?

RE: We resume work tomorrow

loading will be finalised tomorrow.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

If it's a union operation, it needs no explanation.

Timing has an awful lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

RE: We resume work tomorrow

If it was union, they would put up their 10 min break sign and then come back in the morning.
