Six cranes tested

Six cranes tested

Six cranes tested

(OP)
Days ago we tested six cranes in a vessel.

To report on that (to give a short name to the job done), should I say "Cranes test" or "Cranes testing"?

What should I use in the subject of an email referred to that?

Agustín Tomás

RE: Six cranes tested

I'd say "crane tests".  You performed many crane tests.  Each test was performed on a crane.  It sounds better to me, anyway.

AT intellectuel/liguistic curiosity is a good thing, but in all honesty are you not a bit perfectionist to be posting on Engtips just to get the subject of an email right? smile
(no offense meant)

RE: Six cranes tested

Crane Testing ......

RE: Six cranes tested

epoisses, what else is this language/grammar forum supposed to be for?  Surely one wouldn't want to start off one's professional email with a malformed subject line.

Hola epoisses,

I really do not care at all if I am considered obsesive or simply a perfectionist. In Spanish, sure I am!

I wish I had the chance to really learn English properly.

A 99% of people for whom I work is not from Argentina so I do need English, spoken and writen. (Very seldom French and a little more frequently, Portuguese).

Moreover, with 95% of that people I never met (never will) personally. What they get from me, most of the time are my reports on the jobs done and no so often, conversations on the phone if the need arises.

I try to improve albeit I know I am too far from speaking properly.

I was at sea for more than 17 years and another 16 working with foreigners and quite frequently in foreing countries.

Let me tell you, that better you speak/write a language, better chances you have.

And, by the way, what is the purpose of this forum, after all?

Email subjects deserve the same attention as any text where I want to convey ideas, whatever they are.

Si Usted preguntara algo sobre español, yo le contestaría sin dudar.

RE: Six cranes tested

Agustín,

Your attitude is commendable.

RE: Six cranes tested

If you are writing about the procedure used, and the philosophy thereof, you should say 'testing'.  However, if your subject is the actual results of the testing, and the performance of said cranes, you should say 'tests'.  If you only performed one test, somehow, use 'test'.

RE: Six cranes tested

Agustin,

You shouldn't put down your English language skills too much. As you can see from the variety of responses to your question that it isn't an obvious answer even to a native English speaker, and it might easily have been asked by an English speaker.
Ok there are a few tiny problems with some of your text, but you also correctly use relatively uncommon language such as 'albeit'. I often see worse use of language from native English speakers.
To go back to the original question, I would probably have written "Crane testing", just because it sounds right to me. I'm sure however if you looked much more deeply into the semantics you might come up with another title, but I don't tend to do that too often with email subject headings!

RE: Six cranes tested

HgTX, atferrari,

OK OK... smile just trying the old "disagree with the OP" trick to stir up some discussion

RE: Six cranes tested

Hola epoissses,

Your trick did work, after all!  winky smile

Thanks to all for the replies!
