Can anyone tell me if you can open a 3d max file in Solidworks? If not what do I need to do so that I can?

You have to save the SolidWorks file as IGES, then import into 3DS Max.

fcsuper-No I don't have access to 3ds.
ctopher-I need to import a .max file into Solidworks
rockguy - I only have the basic Solidworks package. I will try polytrans if they have a free demo.

Thanks for the replys

RE: 3d max file

Hello B. Long,

Why not download a trial version of 3D Max then export as IGES into SolidWorks?

Cheers,

josephv - Thank you, I will do that. It didn't even occur to me when I posted last night. I am giving you a star.

RE: 3d max file

Is the Max file polygons or nurb surfaces? If its poly's you probably don't want to waste your time trying to bring the model into solidworks base package, but if you are looking for a free polygon converter google Accutrans. Rhino is probably your best approach though even though the trail of 3ds is a good suggestion. You get 25 exports out of the demo. You will find out as soon as you import if it is nurbs or polys, and if it is nurbs you can save out as IGES, and if it is a low count of polys you could save as stl and import.

RE: 3d max file

just opened Rhino. Its imports .3ds but it didn't have .max listed. Sorry for the bunk suggestion although If I was a betting man I'd say your file is polygons.

Thanks, but I downloaded the trial of 3ds max. I worked like a charm.

RE: 3d max file

The easiest way is to have the .max user export to IGES, then send you the file.
