How to pronounce "soffit"

How to pronounce "soffit"

How to pronounce "soffit"

(OP)
Now that JAE has started this, I would like a vote on soffit.  I say soff-it, but a lot of architects seem to think it is French, and say suf-feat.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

I vote for both. I hear it said both ways.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

A soffit haiku:

Soffit built too low
Mind your head, or you'll bang it.
Didn't read the print.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

Who cares how it's pronounced at this point?  We've gotten a humorous haiku about a soffit.

That's not something I ever thought possible.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

Well, if you want the builders around here to know what you're talking about, you beter say "soff-it".

Even that will only do so much good:)

Regards,

Mike

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

It's not "soffiette", "soffiet", or "soffier".  I don't see how one can Frenchify "soffit".  It's just pseudo-intellectual pseudo-French.

Sorry to be such a curmudgeon (prononced "coeur-muj-ee-oen")

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

I'm reminded of the Monty Python sketch, "Learning to Fly."
To paraphrase Graham Chapman,

"Oh, aren't we special--playing the grand piano and banging our heads on the soff-eet."

Or--try going to Home Depot and asking for a vented
soff-eet.  I think you will be laughed at.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

heh - architects trying to be French.  That's just too good...and typical.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

"former framer"...

That's almost (but not quite) as poetic as the aforementioned haiku...

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

It will also help if you say "better" instead of "beter", but not much.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

And DaveAtkins' remembrance of one Monty Python sketch made me remember another:

"It's spelt luxury yacht, but it's pronounced throat warbler mangrove."

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

Never, but never question engineer's judgement

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

It's pronounced soff-it over here in England.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

I pronounce it saw-fit.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

I agree - you always hyphenate at the double consonants for syllables.  So SAW-FIT fits.

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

So you would argue syllable is correctly pronounced SILL-LABEL?

RE: How to pronounce "soffit"

No.  But...

I would sur-rep-ti-tious-ly sur-ren-der to using the DIC-TION-AR-Y. bigsmile
