welded stud analysis

welded stud analysis

welded stud analysis

(OP)
So I'm trying to figure out how to analyze the design strength of a steel stud welded to a plate and embedded into concrete. The stud will be subjected to shear force only. I've analyzed the steel stud in shear and I've completed the analysis of the concrete break-out strength in shear. The one failure mode that I'm not sure how to analyze is that of failure of the weld connecting the stud to the plate. I've analysed welds before but never for a circular shaped weld. If anyone has any insight or an alternate equation I'd appreciate it.

RE: welded stud analysis

HCA (headed concrete anchors) are typically welded to a plate with a stud gun.  This develops the strength of the stud.  They don't normally have, say, fillet welds at the bottom.  This applies to the US.

Yeah, I was looking at the Nelson stud headed concrete anchors (H4L) or the Shear connector (S3L). I was assuming they would be fillet welded, but if thats not the case, perhaps theres a failure mode I'm not thinking of.

Thanks for the help on this.

RE: welded stud analysis

Stud welds are equal or greater in strength to the studs themselves.

"Stud welds are equal or greater in strength to the studs themselves."

If they are placed properly, do a sample and belt it sideways with a hammer. The stud should bend, if it flies off, re adjust the stud gun.
