Why would a reversible 110 AC motor quit working in reverse?
Why would a reversible 110 AC motor quit working in reverse?
(OP)
I have an old ac winch that is used to launch and retreive a boat. Suddenly last week, the winch motor quit working in reverse (in) mode but works fine in the launch (out) mode. There are 4 wires (2 sets of 2 wires) going into the switch panel from the motor. The winch is controlled by a wired remote that has 2 buttons - "in" and "out". The switch panel has a transformer that reduces the power to 24 volts for the wired remote. The manufacturer claims this is an added safety measure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The up button is toast.
The reversing relay is toast.
A wire is broken.
I would find an electrician if I were you. These type installations have a lot of little gotchas, many of which can be promptly fatal because of the water proximity. The whole system should be gone over by someone experienced who will, besides fix the problem, spot other potential ones at the same time.

To Reset Circuit Breaker. If the winch fails tooperate, the end of the
motor should bechecked. Ifthe circuit breaker hastripped, this will be
indicated by the center portion of the breaker protruding from the
main body. To reset the breaker, merely press thecenter portion back into
the assembly.
2. The Switch could be defective on the cable in side and not and not sending voltage from the inverter to the motor when depressed (my bet)
3. Broken wires or bad connection in switch
See if obe of these is is like your wench:
