Question on Fire Extinguisher

Question on Fire Extinguisher

(OP)
We are procuring many type of Fire extinguishers as a part of project procurement.

We are construction contractors.

Our core competence is construction, pipe, pipe line, structures.

We have ateam of consultants, but when it comes to fire extinguishers, (Portable) we do not have any clue as to what kind of certification is required.

Question 1:

can we simply go to a store in buy a particular type of extinguisher

Question 2: Does the fire extinguisher need certificaton?

Q 3: What should the certification contain

Q4: Is there some thing called validity certificate?

Q 5: Which part of UL/FM/API deals with procurement/cetification of Fire extinguisher?

RE: Question on Fire Extinguisher

Depends on where your project is. In the US and Canada, the local, regional and state fire codes require that the extinguisher be listed. The UL listing mark should include the extinguisher's rating.

Extinguishers are rated based on the type of fuel (Class A for combustibles, Class B for flammable & combustible liquids, Class D for combustible metals) and if the extinguisher has been evaluated for application of the particular agent onto energized electrical circuits (Class C).

Installation and selection should be in accordance with National Fire Protection Association Standard 10.
