How to define material grade with NDE?

How to define material grade with NDE?

How to define material grade with NDE?

(OP)
Gentleman,

There is one underground 90 degree elbow size 34". We do not have the record. We want to define the material grade whether it is A234-WPB or ASTM A860 WPHY 65. Can some body advise the NDE method please? Is PMI(Positive Material Identification)applicable? We can not do tensile test(DE. Thanks.

RE: How to define material grade with NDE?

PMI with hardness should give you an idea on what the material is.

Could you please advise about the hardness and composition of A234WPB against ASTM A860 WPHY 65 in detail? Thanks a million.

You will need to use portable OE so that you can get a carbon content.

Y-65 fitting have mutiple chemistries. Microalloying with Nb & V is often done, Mn is often > 1.2%. WPB fittings are essentially, C + Mn alloys with Mn < 1.0%. Checks for Nb, V, Ti & Mn should provide evidence of material grade.
