Sand Pit Lake Design

Sand Pit Lake Design

Sand Pit Lake Design

(OP)
A client is having us look into a project that involves constructing a 200+ Acre recreational (boating, sking, fishing) "Sand Pit" lake. The project is located in the midwest in a broad sandy flood plain not far from a river. I have a good handle on the flood plain and enviromental issues, but not much experiance with the following topics:

-beech slopes
-underwater slopes
-lake Depth
-Dredging
-Docks

If anyone has ever worked on a lake such as this I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiances.

Also, is there any books or resouces on lake development out there?

Thanks,

RE: Sand Pit Lake Design

These types of lakes are the product of a sand/gravel business. After years of pumping product into a stockpile which is then sold and transported by trucks, the remaining hole becomes a lake and some enterprising person stocks it with bass and sells shoreline RV sites.  The aggregate is certified by the state as a component in asphaltic cement concrete and in PC concrete.  Start by removing the topsoil: second, pump sand/gravel from a floating dredge into a stockpile and run associated tests; third, sell the aggregate to commercial pavers and the state DOT: fourth, switch to lot sales after subdividing the shore.

RE: Sand Pit Lake Design

Beach slopes should be fairly flat. 4-6%. thi allows the little ones a fair amount of room. the beach area should be rped off and signshould be posted on bouys to keep baots away.
Once out of the beach areas, the slope of the bottom can be 1 foot in 10. This allows shorter docks.
You should have a few deep spots for fish to winter over, 25-40 ft. deep.
Need some area for weds to grow.
Go look at a few small developed lakes and talk to the landowners and local bait shops about the lake.
Common sense and investigation will do you well.
Also talk to the Local Dept. of Nat. Resources about fish stocking rules

Thanks both of you for your comments!

Great advice dicksewerrat, it would be time well spent looking at other lakes in the area.

And it has been awhile since I've been let out of my cubicle.
