Drilled Pier Design

Drilled Pier Design

(OP)
I'm also looking for a good structural text on how to design drilled piers.  Anyone have a recommendation?  A course would be nice too.

There seems to be lots of geotechnical information on them but very little as far as structural design goes.

Thanks,
Will

RE: Drilled Pier Design

You can find much information at the FHWA website for drilled shafts.  Use your web browser to find it.  The docuement is free and covers both design and construction.

Another location to look for helpful information is the US Army Corps of Engineers.

RE: Drilled Pier Design

WBUW,

Further to QShake, NHI offers a course on the geotechnical design of drilled shafts. Resteel in drilled shafts is designed to permit the shaft to withstand design shear and moments (as circular columns) and to ensure fixity (for moment, shear and axial uplift loads) at the transition to the supported structure.

Normal reinforced concrete design procedures are applicable. Note that the soil-shaft interaction, including below-grade moments, should be evaluated with the assitance of a geotechnical engineer.

RE: Drilled Pier Design

WBUW,

The structural design is as per a normal round concrete column. If the surrounding soil is good then treat like a short column, if the soil at the top is poor then you may have a few small slenderness effects so you should check it as a long column.

The geotech should be able to give you the effective point of fixity so that you can calculate the moment.
