Sheathing material - Right name

Sheathing material - Right name

Sheathing material - Right name

(OP)
I ve seen quite often, the expresion "gauge", used to name the metallic covers employed for sheathing steel coils for transportation.

Is is a right name? Dictionary seems to be of no help here.

The material is some 1 to 1.5 mm thick. May I also call it "metallic plate" or what else if not "gauge".

RE: Sheathing material - Right name

This can get a bit complex. Gauge [or gage] is actually a measure of weight [weight per sq ft in lbs]  not thickness. Originally each company had it's own gauge .That has been simplified but there are still different systems. For example the USS or Manufacturers Gage for steel sheet of 16 is .0596" or 2.50 lbs per sq ft.To avoid these problems always give the thickness you want rather than gage.Thickness less than 1/4" is sheet, and 1/4" or thicker is referred to as plate. So you would order ,for example, steel sheet, 1.5 mm thick.

RE: Sheathing material - Right name

Perhaps you are referring to "wire gauze". Please check under this name in your search for suitable material.

Don't assume that 'wire gauge' is the same as 'sheet gauge'. Order by thickness in inches or mm.
