ESP trips due to power dip

ESP trips due to power dip

ESP trips due to power dip

(OP)
Hi all!

For 2 summers already (maybe more) - we experiencing the same problem - ESPs trips on wells due to power dips/spikes in industrial power lines. (Oil Field is onshore, Western Siberia, Russia). And it happens at least once per week sometimes more and give us quite a big amount of deferment.

The cause of spikes/ dips is thunderstorms somewhere far away or neighbouring Field Substation failures.

ESPs protection settings range was ajusted to maximum one recommended by the manufacture - but it did not help much.

Maybe somebody experienced the same problem and can advise whether nothing can be done or still some solution exists.

Would appreciate

Tatiana

RE: ESP trips due to power dip

If using a PLC and UPS, perhaps you can provide sensors that differentiate trips due to brief power outage from process trips.  If so you could program the PLC for automatic restart.

RE: ESP trips due to power dip

There are a couple of things you can try
1.  If on a switchboard adjust the low voltage trip and also the voltage imbalance trip, this will increase the tollerance to low voltage situations.
2.  If on a VFD do the same and dependant on the VFD you may be able to adjust the ride through time.

Remember though, the function of either the VFD or sitchboard is to protect the ESP and it sounds like that's exactly what they are doing.
