Design of Stainless Steel Pipe under Concrete Tank

Design of Stainless Steel Pipe under Concrete Tank

Design of Stainless Steel Pipe under Concrete Tank

The process guys have located a 6" and 10" drain under our 46'x46'x24' concrete tanks.  The contractor wants to use stainless steel pipe because he has it in stock.  I have design guides for ductile iron pipe but not stainless steel pipe.  Does anyone know of a design guide for buried stainless steel pipe subject to vertical pressure?  How far would you usually bury a pipe under a tank?  What type of bedding would you use for the tank?  We specify 24" of cover with type 5 bedding.  Do you think that is enough?  The tank is a wastewater treatment tank in PA.

What type of stainless ? What will it lay in ? 300 series stainless is usually not used buried because it's prone to pitting corrosion .

Don't know the type of stainless pipe. The bedding will be either Type 5 - pipe buried in compacted course aggregate (AASHTO #57) or Type 4 - pipe lays in sand to 1/8 diameter then compacted backfill around pipe.

I would encase the pipe, no matter what the material is, and not worry about the structural design.
