Eccentric cone design to ASME VIII Div 1

Eccentric cone design to ASME VIII Div 1

(OP)
Hi folks,

Could someone give me a quick pointer to advise me if it is possible to design eccentric cones to ASME VIII Div 1. Is there an example calculation with formulas in the codebook etc.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Chas

Seeker88,

You can design the eccentric cone in the same manner as you design a concentric cone. For internal pressure design, use the largest alpha (half-apex angle) in the calculations. For external pressure design, determine the thicknesses for both the smallest and largest alpha in the calculations, and use the one with the greater thickness.

I'm curious if there's any sort of reference for that.  The normal procedures are all derived assuming a symmetretical cone.  For example, where it joins to a cylinder or compression ring, that gives you uniform radial forces at the junction- but what happens when those forces vary?

Seeker88, I would suggest you review UG-32, UG-33, UG-36, UW-12, Apx 1-5 & 1-8 to understand terminology and various design rules. 1-4 may be helpful also.

Mike
