SPLICE LOCATION

SPLICE LOCATION

(OP)
Good day guys, i am just new to the group as well as new to the truss industry i would like to know the safe location of the splices along a panel at TOP & BOTTOM chord. thanks a lot this space is very helpful to us.

RE: SPLICE LOCATION

It is good practice to keep the splice near a location of zero moment.  On top chords, I usually place the top chords at a panel point.  On bottom chords, I will try to break the lumber at the nearest 2 foot increment, while trying to keep it near zero moment locations.

RE: SPLICE LOCATION

We joint splice when economical, then second choice is panel splice within 12" of a web joint. This is just to keep chords straight. You can splice pretty much anywhere you want as the truss software will analyze the joint accordingly.

RE: SPLICE LOCATION

The truss company I use to work for forbid splicing at joints.  They aimed for 1/4 points of the panel.  I think it had something to do with production.

RE: SPLICE LOCATION

Back in the old C-Clamp production days, joint splice was the only option. Panel splices were not allowed at all.

Should I mention floor trusses? This is a whole new beast. Splicing near the center of the truss creates a lot of issues. On a 24' floor truss, it is better to splice the bottom chord with 6'-12'-6' instead of using 12'-12'.
