Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

(OP)
I can not find how to extrude or revolve a portion of a sketch in NX5. Is this possible in NX5? If so, could you please explain. Through the QuickPick one can select an arc or other object that is a portion of a sketch, but the feature still builds (or tries to) with the entire sketch.

Thanks for you help,

KLINE

RE: Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

Click the Extude or Revolve icon, then on the Selection Bar, set your Selection Intent pulldown to Single Curve or Connected Curves then pick the parts of the sketch you want to Extrude/Revolve.  If it's set to Feature Curves, you'll just keep picking the entire Sketch, since that's a Curve Feature.

Thanks Tim, I knew there was a way... I now see (going from NX2 to NX5) the extents at which the selection bar has traveled to, and why it is separated from the rest of the toolbars. The selection bar almost should be permanent really...

Thanks again,

KLINE

RE: Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

I hope they add Style pulldowns to it someday....just select a curve (or other geometry) and change line font, width, color all from the Selection Bar.  I think it would reduce a mouse click or two for changing the appearance of entities.

Note that the 'Selection Bar' is permanent in UGS NX 5.  Granted, the content changes based on the task or application that you're in, but the toolbar itself remains a in a constant, easily accessable location at all times.

RE: Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

John,

No, I didn't mean that method was too many clicks.  But then again, that's not the complete process to Edit the display of an object is it?  That's only 2 clicks and nothing has been changed yet, you've only invoked the Edit Display dialog so far.  I was speaking in terms of the whole process from start to finish.

Let's say you want to just change color of a curve.  With the workflow you provided which already has 2 picks, you have to then pick the color tab (3 clicks) to bring up the color selection, then pick your color (4 clicks if it's shown, add 2 clicks if you need to pick from the FULL color map), then dismiss the menu (5 clicks minium) versus picking from a visible pulldown as I suggested (3 clicks TOTAL -> pick entity, pick pulldown, pick color from pulldown, done).

RE: Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

But will we need to also add 'pull-downs' for Font, Thickness, Layer, and if it were a solid/sheet body that I selected, Translucency as well?  Sounds like a pretty cluttered toolbar to me.  Granted, a scheme like this could save a few mouse clicks, but at what price?

I'd pay a dollar for that.

RE: Extrude / Revolve a portion of a sketch?

Thank you Justin, I think.

John,

This is cluttered?:

My GOD!!! Look at all those toolbars above the Selection Bar...they are even MORE CLUTTERED!

I'm counting 7 pulldowns with room for a small 8th....hmmmm...Layer anyone?  Go ahead and take 2 away to make room for Selection Intent if you want....or better yet, make the added pulldowns disappear when selection intent is being called upon (like during a revolve).

Regarding any associated "costs", I cannot answer that, but I'm sure your developers might be able to.
