Truss Repair Publication?

Truss Repair Publication?

Truss Repair Publication?

(OP)
Can someone recommend a truss repair publication? Or a regularly offered course? Or some notes that could be shared from a previously taken course? Or if you are an experienced PE who regularly repairs trusses, how you approach it would be most helpful.

RE: Truss Repair Publication?

I would say firstly, get the design force(s) in the truss members by either traditional or fancy (RISA) methods. Then, design gusset plates that will transfer same forces.

RE: Truss Repair Publication?

I doubt you will find a publication on this. It is usually done by first principles depending on the particular details of the job.

As Frameman said, first calculate the forces in the members.

If the problem is compression then you may be able to add additional braces to reduce the effective length. Otherwise you will need to splice on additional members or gusset plates.

RE: Truss Repair Publication?

Many (most) of the truss plate manufacturers offer repair designs - at a price of course.

IF the truss is any more than about a 30 feet long residential truss - I strongly suggest you take advantage of their services... Usually not that expensive and they DO know what they are doing.

Good Luck

RE: Truss Repair Publication?

Virginia Tech used to offer a continuing education course for engineers yearly on truss repair design - (2 day seminar)
