Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

(OP)
Currently trying to model a rolled plate to match the exterior of a pipe, similar to a repair patch. Problem is that the patch will have an 'O' ring groove machined into the mating face of the plate, machined prior to rolling the plate. Is it possible to configure AutoCAD 2007 to produce an 'O' ring groove of this manner?

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

I havn't used 3D for a while but I think you are looking at creating a path with an arc as the centre line of the O ring and extruding a solid and then doing a union or subtraction.

Hope this is what you want

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

Sure Draw>Solid>Torus.  It is important for the Torus to match the dimensions of the groove. Then Move the torus to the proper position within the rolled pipe and then Modify>Solid Editing> Subtract the torus form the rolled plate.  Follow the instruction properly when subtracting

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

An o-ring grove, is not the same shape as the o ring.

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

The general principle is the same.  Create a drawing of the o-ring shape.  Revolve it.  Move it.  Subtract it.

Guys, I don't think I made myself all that clear. I need to draw an elliptical 'O' ring. Imagine and 'eye patch' on the outside of a pipe, hence a piece of rolled plate taking say 80-deg of the pipe's circumference. Within this eye patch is an 'O' ring groove.

Can AutoCAD model a circular seal wrapped to match the OD of the pipe?

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

Hi Kander , what do you need ?
To draw the O-ring, or to draw the grove to put the o-ring.
The elliptical , is the pipe shape?
As I say before , the grove is not the same as the O-ring shape.

I will put here  a link where you can see it
By the same way , you can upload your dwg .

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

This is what I picture from the OP description.

If it is indeed the model required, it is not easily accomplished in Autocad; certainly not with anything older than 2007.

This was imported to 2004 (the version to which I have access) from Rhino V4.

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

I have to say that I never realize it was the task to do.

Seant, that is exactly what I am trying to do. Only difference is that the seal shall have a square profile and a seal groove to suit.

So, can you tell me how to do this?

Thanks.

RE: Rolled Plate with 'O' Ring Groove

I believe you will need the new 3D Modeling tools of 2007.  Sadly, I do not have access to that version, so I'm no help on the command sequence.

The critical thing for this same procedure in Rhino was generating the "compound" loop to serve as a path.  Once that is in hand, however, any profile can be used to generate the appropriate solid.  Standard boolean operation can then transfer the feature as needed.

Can you give us some  real data to use ?
, as
Pipe OD
pipe ID
Hole Diameter
Plate diameter
Plate thick
As my experience,  the gasket is better to be a o-ring , just as it is easy to get , no matter the length or the perimeter,it can be build from a chord , cut to size and glued it´s end to make it.

The grove  shall be as stated in O-RING handbook
