BOM qty's and sub assembly qtys
BOM qty's and sub assembly qtys
(OP)
We currently use autocad, but are trying to move into Solidworks. We build machinery which require serveral parts, some of those parts are then assembled/welded into sub assemblies, then those sub assemlies may be used multiple times on the final assembly of the machine. The way I've started setting up the drawings is with custom properties info for the bom, each part drawing has its own little bom that specifies material, stocksize, process, etc.. Then I make a sub assembly that may use several parts, and that drawing has its own bom that specifies what drawings are needed to make the sub-assembly. Then I want to make the final assembly with its own bom showing how many individual parts, sub-assemblies, are needed to build the final assembly. In autocad usally take the sub assemly prints and issue them to the weldshop to build, in that drawing is a machine qty telling them how many assemlies they need to weld up. With solidworks im trying to let solidworks keep track of the qty's. My question is in my sub-assmbly drawings how do I make solidworks show total number of assemblies required for the final assembly? basically I want the welder to have a print that shows what parts he need to go get off the shelf to build his print, I also want him to know how many of these assemblies he needs to weld up. I know that in the finall assembly drawing that bom would show how many assemblies are needed, based on how many times I used it in the drawing. But I dont know how i could link that qty back to the sub-assembly drawing so they will know how many to build. Sorry for such a long post, but im trying to be very clear on what im needing help with, and someone please tell me if im doing this the hardway and there is a better way to approach this.
Thanks for the help

RE: BOM qty's and sub assembly qtys
One possible problem with doing what you are trying to do, will arise when you re-use any of those parts or sub-assys in other machines. The quantities required may be different. Normally a work order (or manually marked up print) would carry the quantity required information.

By doing that, you'd avoid the problem that CBL brought up.

Would this work?
Put two separate BOM’s onto your one drawing.
We build the 2 different assemblies’, and then put one SolidWorks table BOM not Excel onto the anchor point. Then right mouse click on the second assembly pick table for SolidWorks BOM. You will have to place this somewhere on your drawing by hand.
