Nooby, "non-manifold solid" error, NX4

Nooby, "non-manifold solid" error, NX4

Nooby, "non-manifold solid" error, NX4

(OP)
I upgraded to NX4.

Very simple, very nooby question

Sketch circle, extrude to cylinder

Sketch square on top face of cylinder, extrude into cylinder body, subract, creating pocket in cylinder

Sketch hexagon on bottom face of cylinder, extrude into cylinder body, subtract, get error "non-manifold solid"

??? Square subtraction was successful, but hexagon subraction has error ???

Any help?

Brian

RE: Nooby, "non-manifold solid" error, NX4

Try extruding your hex slightly in the opposite direction as well.  This may eliminate any zero thickness issues, which is often the cause for that error message.

RE: Nooby, "non-manifold solid" error, NX4

Is the hexagon inscribed or circumscribed to the circle?  That scenario could also produce a non-manifold solid.

Thanks for your help and replies.

The hexagon is completely within the base circle of the cylinder.

The hexagon was created on the same datum plane as the base circle, but I didn't think that mattered.

IMO, it really shouldn't matter, but unfortunately in NX it sometimes does.  I've just forced myself to always model so that all bodies (solids or sheets) extend past the target bodies, just to be on the safe side.

As with most computer problems, it was "user error".

The hexagon sketch was not completely enclosed. Two lines did not share an endpoint.

Thanks for your help.
