release agent / coating

(OP)
Hi all , I am having trouble selecting a suitable release agent / coating. I am trying to replicate a fine structured, metal surface by casting ( with a polymer resin) . The metal surface has a mirror finish. Can anyone suggest a suitable release agent or coating to use. I need it to create a fine, release layer which is uniform (microns thick only) and has no "clumping". Wax based agents are out as the agent needs to get into fine crevices. Some sort of spray would seem suitable but not sure how uniform that can be if applied by hand . I was also wondering if low adhesion (removable) coating like a silver spray ( or vacumm silver coating ) might be an alternative? any advice will be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Opticsman

RE: release agent / coating

Your best option is to use a silane based release in solvent solution. A low concentration in solvent is required to get good uniform coverage with only a very thin residual deposit. The silanes leave a deposit that then cures by reaction with moisture in the air. Many release manufacturers make these including Hysol Freecote. For optically smooth surfaces I often use Rain-X on plate-glass molds.
