Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

(OP)
Can anybody assist me in determining the deflection at the top of a 8"dia. stainless steel Sch.#40 Pipe x 20Ft. high Deisel Exhaust Vent Stack. Its anchored at its base and guided at the roof at 82.5", with 157.5" above the roof, the wind load is 400 lbs. force.
Usually I do simple calculations on steel support frames for HVAC equipment, but occassionally something different pops up.
   Thanks in advance.

RE: Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

It should be a simple cantilever beam problem.  The AISC Manual of Steel Construction has the formulas you need to solve the problem.  Good luck!

RE: Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

Tony,
The deflection at the top of the stack is 0.24892" (approx. 1/4"), based upon the data you posted.

RE: Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

My calculation is 0.346 inches. If you can give me the wind speed, I can give you more accurate result.

RE: Wind Load on 8"Dia.Pipe Exhaust Stack

I get 0.378".  This assumes the 400# is applied at the top of the stack, not likely.
