vacuum tight welding connection

(OP)
For our application (a vacuum tight tank) we need to have a welding connection with a very high gas leaking tightness. What kind of welding technology is suitable for high vacuum tightness? Our requirement is a leaking tightness below 150 * 10-9 mbar * dm3 / s (for air) for a 10 dm3 volume tank. The length of the total weld is approximately 2 meter (the form of the tank is very slim). What kind of gas tightness is possible for welding connection for industrial applications?

RE: vacuum tight welding connection

If done properly by a skilled welder the weld proper will have the same permeability as the base metal, "O" except to Helium and Hydrogen. It's the defects in the weld that cause problems. Skilled welders and through inspection will take the weld out of the picture.

All high vacuum equipment use welding.

RE: vacuum tight welding connection

Good edge prep, very clean metal, the best purge gas practices.  This is done all of the time.

What metals are you welding?  How thick?

RE: vacuum tight welding connection

Skillful TIG welding joints that are not very constrained works pretty good in stainless steel
