Dimensioning Problems
Dimensioning Problems
(OP)
Hi again all.
I am trying to move the diameter and length dimension on the left side of the section view to the detail view.
I went to the help section and if you search for “moving and copying dimension” you will see a page that I thought explained what I wanted to do. Using the shift key and dragging dimension results in a red circle with a line through it.
So, I cannot move or copy dimensions from section to detail view without that pesky red circle with the slash running thru it.
Can anyone advise me on this?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Dimensioning Problems
Solidworks is unable to copy/move dimensions if one of the views involved is a cross-section.
I think the basic logic is that when you copy a dimension, SW takes the endpoints from the dimension you are moving, determines where those points exist in the part model, and now project those points back into the drawing view that you are dragging to.
With a section view, the dimensions that you created do not have a defined location in the part model to references. The points in the section view only truly exist in the drawing (based on the section line)and aren't in the part model. So SW is unable to make the conversion.
Should it be able to do it (especially if it is just a blown-up detail of the same view)? Probably.
Can it do it? I don't think so.
