I am in the process of creating a drawing that uses drawing views plus sketched lines. For some reason I can't dimension between the drawing view and the sketched lines. Is there something that I need to do to make Solidworks allow this to happen...it is very annoying.

Thanks,
CJ

If I remember correctly, you have to create the sketch on the view. You can then move it to where you need it and apply your dimension.

Jeff is correct. It has to be within the active view where the dim would be located.

Jeff and Chris are right on - if you want to make sure that your view is active, double click the view before you start the sketch.

Thanks Jeff.

What if I had a pre-existing view (that included a sketch) and I pulled in a view of a different component?

To give you better idea, I am creating a drawing of a cable assy. I had an exisitng drawing that I could use to create the new drawing, so I just used the current drawing and pulled in a drawing view of another connector, which is "attached" to the other end of the cable. I want to dimension the distance between the connectors.

Is that possible?

RE: "A dimension could not becreated from the selected items"

Hello CJ,

I am confused, why not create an assembly drawing that has both connectors. That way you are working with one view, and you can create your dimension in this one view.

Cheers,

Yeah, make sure the sketch is in the same drawing view as the part you are trying to dimension it to.  If they are already in different views, the work around is to place a point on the drawing view with the part at the expected location and just dim to that.

BTW, at my company, we make cable drawings just like this.  It's quick, easy and simple.

Also, put in an enhancement request that allows dimensioning across multiple drawing views.  SolidWorks is already aware of this need...they just need more votes on the issue to know it's important enough to put resources into making it happen.
