GM has a 6L80 six speed automatic transmission.
As far as a modified version goes, there maybe some performance transmission shops that have some mods for them. Usually it takes awhile for the aftermarket manufactures to come up with performance parts. Anyone modifying them would need the machines to fabricate any special parts required. Hope fully alot of parts from something like the 4L80 would interchange. Items that are usually needed to beef up an automatic are input and output shafts, reaction shell, planetary gear sets, bands and clutch packs /pistons, pump, sprags and roller clutches, then of course valve body modifications. Not known for sure, but maybe things like the clutches, and some gear sets maybe interchangable between the two.
Sounds like a fun project. I think an allison would be too heavy if this a race car application.

Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG (twin-turbo) is putting 600+ hp and nearly 740 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed auto.

All of the above are computer controlled;  it would seem to take a great deal of effort to control them properly when used with an engine that has different characteristics than whatever they came with.

Ross, actually it is pretty easy, there are aftermarket controllers for electronic automatic transmissions.

RE: looking for a high torque 5 or 6 spd automatic

You could always use the ZF 6HP32 as used on the Rolls Royce, BMW 7 series and Bentley Arnage amongst others. Bentley Arnage has almost 1000Nm engine torque.

The 6L80e is destined to be used in a wide variety of vehicles with very few mechanical changes. That's why the ECU is inside the transmission and supposedly very programmable. Time will tell.
