Lightning protection of aircraft made of composite materials

Lightning protection of aircraft made of composite materials

(OP)
I am looking for information on lightning protection of aircraft using composite materials. In particular what kind of adhesive to use to paste aluminum foil on surface to give electrical continuity between screws that fasten the skin to the wing spar. The foil needs to remain in place at very high speeds.

RE: Lightning protection of aircraft made of composite materials

You might wanna try Eccobond 56C/Catalyst 9, that's what we use as a conductive adhesive. You can contact Eccobond is tradename, so you can ask your resin/adhesive supplier on more details. I cannot assure that it will also bond to your specific aluminum foil, but I would think it should.
Good luck.

1) Self-adhesive thin foil (3M)
2) Thin layer of sealant and foil applied with squeegee.
3) Flame Spray (oxy-acetylene aluminum painting)
4) Paint on conductive coating. (probably the easiest)

You will still have to seal the panel, prime and topcoat.

Cirrus uses a wire mesh embedded right into the matrix. They use MGS L285 or L418 resin. Finish is a skim coat of evercoat and then PPG paint.

Beech Aircraft added it as after production to the now defunct "Starship" twin pusher prop jet about 15 years ago.

Good luck,
