Surface creation from a field of points

Surface creation from a field of points

Surface creation from a field of points

(OP)
I am trying to figure out if it is possible to create a surface from a field of points that I imported into Catia from an Excel file.  I have tried Quick Surface Reconstruction and Digitized Shape Editor, but in order o use these I need to import a point cloud and I don't know how to create a point cloud from the exisitng points I made in Catia. If anybody knows that this is possible to do I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in Advance!

RE: Surface creation from a field of points

I'm writing this out of the top of my head now... I used to work with DSE but we don't have it where I work now... It's worth a try though. So:

1. Save the excel file as a text file
2. (Optional) Rename the text file extension to "asc"
3. From DSE workbench, choose "Import Cloud"
4. From the file type choose "ascii"
5. Browse for the saved text (ascii) file
6. You will probably need to play a little bit with the options there, and then hit ok.

This should bring you a point cloud in your file. Now, the surface reconstruction is a different (and longer) story, but at least you can have something you can play with.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
Stely

RE: Surface creation from a field of points

Forgot to mention: depending on the number of points in the excel file, you may have a very poor point cloud (usually it takes many thousands of points to properly define a surface)...

Thanks Stely, that at least gives me something to work with.  I only have about 2000 points at the moment, I just wanted to see how it is done, and then I can refine my original process to get more points into the excel file and increase resolution of the surface

Thanks again
