Overloading Chiller

Overloading Chiller

Overloading Chiller

(OP)
I am being asked to bless the use of 90T chiller for an extension to a retirement home.

The unit is a York 90T 2 reciprocating compressor with a water cooled condenser.

I want to add about 40T load to this chiller.
I believe the chiller is currently operating between 40 and 60T.

My question is, if the unit encounters a load of 10 to 15T greater than its nameplate capacity, what will be the outcome? Will the unit "float" to a higher operating point, or will it shutdown on excessive suction pressure , excessive motor current or some other limitation?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

RE: Overloading Chiller

If all controls are set and in good order, the chiller should " float' to a higher operating point and just keep running

RE: Overloading Chiller

If it's overloaded, it simply won't cool the way it's supposed to, or it'll do it at an excessive cost, or it will fail sooner than normal, or all of the above.

RE: Overloading Chiller

If it has a newer style controller, the machine will unload due to high suction or high amperage. I would rather see a recip chiller run at full load than unloaded due to excessive starts like you had before you added the new load to it. JMHO
