Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

(OP)
I just got a hot new computer that runs Vista.  I just tried to install Mathcad 13 on it and Mathcad 13 will not start.  The install went with no problems.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

I found out I had to be in Administrator mode.  What a pain.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

So this means that MathCad 13 will run on Vista but you have admin rights to run it?

Yes, I had to right click on Mathcad and go down to the properties.  There I had to select run as admin.  My vista computer is at work so I don't remember the exact wording but it is obvious. Now I can start Mathcad but I must give it permission to run.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

I can't get it to work on on Vista 64 bit version, even when installed as an admin.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

I agree with brmech, I cannot get Mathcad 13 to run with Vista x64.  Compatibility mode does not work, nor does "run as admin".

I am following a thread on this issue on the Mathcad forums:
http://collab.mathsoft.com/ type in "vista" in search query.

Is anyone aware of a response from PTC on this issue?

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

I just spoke with Angel @ PTC tech support(1-781-370-5204).  To paraphrase her statement: "As we no longer support Mathcad 13, we can not verify whether or not Mathcad 13 is compatible or can be made compatible with Vista 64 bit.  In some cases, the 'Run as Admin' setting may work, but we cannot definitively say whether or not it does.  The newest release, Mathcad 14 (actually 14 M011) does work with Vista x64."

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

Nothing to add to but to moan.

The arrogant summary dismissal by PTC of 13 on Vista does PTC no help whatsoever.  If there were an alternative I would buy it on principle.  Vista wasn't around to consider when versions up to 11 and maybe 12 were sold. Cavat emptor, tough, "you've had your monies worth - time to put your hand in your pocket". etc.

However, the point that gets up my nose is that 13 was being heavily marketed up to a few months before Vista was officially released.

I would take a lot of convincing that beta copies of Vista weren't around or that there was enough information to either prepare a service pack or put a warning on the box. "MS are going to issue a new OS in the next few months and we're not going to guarantee that it will work".  The issue of Vista wasn't what could be described as a bolt from the blue.

There would be riots if Ford sold a million cars that used a tyre size that would be unavailable befoe the car was 3 months old.

If anybody from PTC is reading - it stinks.  If you thinks that it will encourage updates from 13 then you are very sadly mistaken.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

No SW vendor is going to certify their product against a beta OS.
Mathcad 13 was developed and released before Vista was officially released.
The fact that Mathcad doesn't run on a new OS doesn't bother me. PTC's Pro/Engineer still doesn't have an officially supportted version for Vista, 32 or 64 bit, and we pay a lot more per seat for it than Mathcad.
At least Matchcad has released 14 which does support Vista.

Bite the bullet and do the upgrade!

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

I did - a couple of months before 14 and Vista was released.

Admittedly, I should have realised by now that increasingly pushy sales normally precedes a Mathcad upgrade.  Finding out you've just been off loaded with lasts years model which then won't run on lead free at full price always leaves an unpleasant taste.

It would seem to be very short sighted not to offer a tapered upgrade price dependent on period of ownership out to at least 6 months.  If I'd been given a discount because I'd only just bought 13, I would have been happy to buy 14 and guess what - I wouldn't now be moaning about Mathad.

Given that most folk have Vista 32 and that Mathcad does run after a fashion on it, your not going to convince me that it couldn't have been fixed.

It wouldn't have been so bad if 14 appeared to be anything more than a polish of 13 for a good many users.  When I purchased Mathcad in 1988, I was convinced it would be a defacto application on every engineer's desk within 5 years.  I wonder why after 20 they are still stuggling with Excel in most places I work in. Mathcad have been lucky there hasn't been more competition.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

Then you probably waited too long to complain.  Many M12 customers were able to get their M12 CDs changed for M13

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

Your right.  But then again I've only just found out that there is question with Vista and lack of support.  13 is fine - no complaints whatsover.  14 doesn't off any more for me.  From past experience, many old timers don't rush into upgrading as you will have read.  If they will change CDs, it begs the question why they didn't offer taper priced upgrade for recent registrations. I have purschased 1.1-2.5 all, 3.0, 3.1, 5, 7, 2000, 11, 13  which I don't believe is unreasonably tight fisted.

RE: Is Mathcad 13 compatible with Vista?

Unless there's something particularly appealling about M13, I'd just as soon stay with M11.  M14 is really about the first version since M12 that's been halfway decent.
