Simulating bolts between Shell and Solid elements (PATRAN)

Simulating bolts between Shell and Solid elements (PATRAN)

(OP)
Hi,

I would like to simulate a bolt connection between a solid and a shell. A metallic surface (simulated by means of Shell elements) lays over a solid part (simulated by means of Solid elements).

Is it possible to use CELAS spring elements to do this? The fact is that by doing so, we will have 6 DOF on one end of the CELAS element (the one which is part of the shell) and 3 DOF on the other (the one which is part of the solid). Can we have a different number of DOFs on both ends of the CELAS element?

In case this is not possible, can anyone suggest me a good alternative option for modeling bolt connections between metallic surfaces and solids?

Thanks in advance,

Julian

Oh and by the way, I am using PATRAN 2005 for this modeling.

You need to put a series of bar or (if very careful) rigid elements thru the thickness of the solid along the fastener line.  Then you can connect the spring elements and there will be stiffness valeus for all 6 dof.
