BS5500 Category II
BS5500 Category II
(OP)
Does anyone know the equivalent category for a BS5500 Category II vessel under the section VIII code?

RE: BS5500 Category II
BS 5500 Cat II means that spot NDE is required. In short this means that 10% of the weld lengths shall be RT or UT.
In ASME this would mean designing with a E of 0.85 for butt joints.
BS 5500 Cat II however allows E=1 (in fact they do not use a weld factor)
RE: BS5500 Category II
The basis is that this is already included in the allowable stresses, note that for PD5500 Cat III you cannot use an allowable stress greater than 120 MPa.
The contradiction to this, however, is that the PED does require joint efficiency factors and so if designing to PED using PD5500 you must include the factors unless you can show an identical level of safety.
