B31.8, Section 826.2(b), Use of the term "field butt welds"

B31.8, Section 826.2(b), Use of the term "field butt welds"

B31.8, Section 826.2(b), Use of the term "field butt welds"

(OP)
Section 826.2(b) in B31.8 (2003) contains the term "field butt welds" which, to me, implies just that...butt welds that are made in the field (not a shop).

I'm working a design that meets the hoop stress criteria of 826.2 but the welding will be performed in a shop environment.  For lack of equivalent guidance for "shop butt welds" I'm compelled to use what's given despite the "field" referene.

Has anyone ran this trap before and with what results?

Not sure what your final application is for this piping, but in my experience "field butt weld" does not preclude a shop weld being made as long as the requirements of 1104 (if that is your governing welding code) are met, there is a PQR to support the WPS and the WPS is adhered to.

Many times the WPQT's and the WQT's are done in a shop.
